Women aren’t the only ones unwittingly damaging their feet from bad footwear. Mens sandals are increasingly the culprit behind heel pain, Achilles tendonitis, and other ailments
Recent market research reveals sales of men’s sandals has grown exponentially between 2007 and 2013. Along with the growing popularity of men’s sandals come more aches and pains for male feet. Anthony Weinert, DPM, FACFAS, a board certified foot and ankle surgeon with offices in Warren and Troy, Michigan, says the wrong sandal could cause men problems including heel pain, Achilles tendonitis, pain in the big toe and even breaks and stress fractures in some of the foot’s 26 bones.
Dr. Weinert recommends men shopping for a man sandal – or “mandal” as some people call it – look for a sturdy, cushioned, supportive sole and padded straps. Men with diabetes should consult their foot and ankle surgeon before wearing sandals.
If you’re a Michigan man experiencing chronic foot pain, you should schedule an appointment with Dr. Weinert to review your shoe choices, your foot alignment, and your overall foot health. If you suspect you have a foot injury or fracture, contact Weinert’s Warren office at 586-751-3338 or his Troy office at 248-362-3338.
