Achilles Tendon Injuries: Big Tendon, Big Injury

Over the last month, we have seen a big number of Achilles tendon strains and ruptures in professional basketball, football and soccer.  In basketball, Ty Lawson has to receive daily care for his Achilles tendon strain. Then in football Jason Peters is out with an Achilles tendon rupture and in soccer, Nigel De Jong is out for an extended amount of time with an Achilles tendon rupture. The hard part about these injuries is that they can have crippling effects on the player and the team, especially when the athlete is a key player to a team’s success.

As the season progresses, a player’s body becomes stressed and will require more time for recovery. But with a rigorous schedule, some players do not receive the needed amount of rest.  This is certainly the case for many professional football and basketball players, which leaves them prone to foot and ankle injuries.

Activities which involve frequent jumping require strong calf muscles and Achilles tendons. For this reason, it is important for athletes to warm up and stretch before fully engaging their opponents. It is also important to fully rest the body when feeling pain in the back of the heel, or when the Achilles tendon is swollen.

With the Super Bowl right around the corner, many professional football players are pushing their bodies to the max. Being highly trained and conditioned athletes, their bodies are accustomed to high stress situations. But for average, day- to- day athletes, rest, proper footwear, and a visit to one of our Michigan offices is recommended whenever pain is experienced in the foot or ankle.
